BRUSHED or NOT BRUSHED sweatshirt?
Luca BensiFor years I was convinced that the sweatshirt was... well the sweatshirt!
I didn't imagine there were differences between one sweatshirt and another ( ahhh the healthy ignorance...).
Then at a certain point they told me about brushed and non-brushed fleece .
Like many other times I opened my eyes wide and since there is always something to learn I looked for information.
In this short article I will explain the difference in simple words, it may be useful when you want to buy your next sweatshirt.
BRUSHED SWEATSHIRT
Detail of the internal fabric brushed of the Doors sweatshirt.
Raising is a fabric finishing process.
Do you know that " furry" effect you find inside a sweatshirt? That's right, that's a brushed sweatshirt.
This type of effect is obtained by combing the fabric with special brushes made of metal teeth.
The fiber of the thread is raised creating that classic furry and soft surface.
Thanks to this type of manufacturing, the inside of the sweatshirt allows less air to pass through the garment, thus acting as a thermal insulator and keeping our body warm.
The first raisings were carried out using dried thistle flowers (the past always has something romantic about it).
Today, however, the processing is carried out with machinery that uses rotating toothed drums capable of creating different types of raising depending on the required result.
For some very valuable fabrics (such as cashmere) there are still companies today that carry out raising with thistle.
Brushed sweatshirts are ideal on cold days, especially in winter.
UNBRUSHED SWEATSHIRT
Detail of the non-brushed interior of our garment-dyed Antithesis sweatshirt.
The non-brushed sweatshirt (or French Terry) is instead a garment that has a tidier interior, without the hairiness that is obtained with brushing.
You can also recognize it by sight because you can see the texture of the fabric.
The result is a lighter sweatshirt, ideal for the autumn and spring period , on cooler days when you want to cover up without sweating and are also an excellent solution for playing sports .
Being more breathable than brushed fleece, it lets our body breathe more.
Obviously it will be a little less insulating if you have to face a cold climate.
WHICH SWEATSHIRT KEEPS YOU WARM?
One of the most frequently asked questions is:
" So the non-brushed sweatshirt doesn't keep you warm?"
It's not really like that.
The answer lies in the weight of the fabric , which you often find indicated with the acronym GSM (grams per square meters = grams per square meter)
The heavier the fabric, the warmer it will keep you; so even a non-brushed sweatshirt could be a good solution for your winter.
Starting from 280gsm, sweatshirts are capable of keeping our body warm even on cold days.
So remember that.... weight matters!
